Who doesn’t love a long weekend? This time of year, there’s nothing better than packing an overnight bag, tossing it in the car, and hitting the open road. Whether you’re looking for a romantic trip for just the two of you, or something for the whole family, we have some suggestions we just know you’ll love.

Door County, WI

No matter what you’re looking for, Door County has an event you’ll love. It’s known for its cherries, and one taste of them will show you exactly why. Go soon, because the first week of August is when they’re ripe and ready for picking!

If you’re looking for something other than the cherries, though, you’re in luck because Door County also boasts every kind of activity or outing you could want. Wineries, breweries, local restaurants featuring some of Door County’s famous fish boils – whatever you’re looking for, from casual fare to fine dining, you’ll find it in Door County. And since it’s only a 3-hour drive from Madison, it’s the perfect distance for a long weekend.

And no matter where you go in Door County, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of their nearly 300 miles of lighthouse-sprinkled shoreline. Some of their lighthouses date back to the 1800s and many of them are open and available for tours and exploration.

Galena, IL

Less than 2 hours from Madison, Galena’s historic Main Street is one of its biggest attractions. Take a stroll through the beautifully preserved 19th-century homes and shops. Several of them are even on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you’ve always wanted to see a reenactment in person, Galena is the place to check them out. From actual battle recreations to tour hosts in full period garb, you’re sure to find something exciting to see.

And make sure you visit some of Galena’s many art studios and galleries to pick up some one-of-a-kind pieces for yourself or for the art lover in your life!

Lake Geneva, WI

Lake Geneva has something for everyone in your family or group, no matter what you’re looking for. Water sports, zip lining, shopping, luxurious spas – Lake Geneva has it all! Only 90 minutes from Madison, this is the perfect place to spend a romantic weekend, plan a girls’ trip, or bring the whole family. Have a budding astrophysicist? Lake Geneva boasts the world’s largest lens telescope at their Yerkes Observatory.

And if you’d rather visit in the winter, The Mountain Top at Grand Geneva has any winter sport you can imagine. Skiing, sledding, snowboarding, ice skating – it’s all here!

Your whole family will love the available petting zoos and horseback riding where you can meet and (gently) pet all kinds of animals, from the more common barnyard variety to more exotic breeds at Safari Lake.

Day Trips

If you’re looking for something a little quicker, Madison itself has plenty to offer. Our wineries are perfect for a day-long girls’ trip or couples outing.

A few to check out include Cambridge Winery, Wollersheim, and the Fisher King Winery. All of these locations feature beautiful settings, guided tours, and of course, delicious, locally-made, award-winning wines.

Wollersheim has both a winery and a distillery, so there’s something for everyone in your party. If you visit their winery, be sure to get a tour of the vineyard.
